With the winter season going on, the temperature is dipping to new lows. Even places like Mumbai are turning cold as never before. Let’s take a look at some foods that will help you survive winters like a pro.

Dry Fruits

Dry Fruits are that royal food which is accessible to most of us in all parts of the world today. They are nutritious and also prove to be an important source of heat these days. What’s more exciting is that there is one for each one of us. Be it pistachio, cashews, almonds, apricots, raisins and much more. You can have them just as they are or have them with your milk or cereals. Dry fruits are one of the most versatile winter foods.

Fenugreek, Pepper and Asafoetida

Fenugreek (Methi), Pepper (kaali mirch) and Asafoetida (Hing) are found in many of the Indian dishes. These spices not just add up to the taste, but also help to keep you in shape. They will, apart from these benefits, help you fight the common health threats like cold and flu. These spices are often added to salads and soups. They are very helpful in inducing warmth in your body.

Spices are full of flavor, aroma, and health benefits but how you store and care for them matters! Spices which are ground begin to lose their potency within 6 months & start to have less magic than when they are freshly ground because a lot of their beneficial, aromatic compounds are volatile. Try to buy whole spices and grind them in small batches (exceptions would be cayenne, paprika, turmeric which are harder to grind oneself). — Ideally, store spices in air-tight containers away from heat and light (not next to that oven or stove). Use ground spices within 6ish months. Whole spices last for a couple of years. — Toasting spices activates their beneficial compounds so try to give them some heat before grinding them up and / or using them in a dish. Turmeric for example does best when heated in a fat source and paired with black pepper. Root Vegetables and Leafy Greens

These foods contain carrots, spinach, beans, beetroots, coriander, onion and more such varieties that grow underground. These foods are best when eaten raw but will also help if consumed cooked. There's a whole chapter dedicated to this hierarchy in my book "𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙈𝙮 𝙆𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙣", but let's briefly touch upon it here. I strongly believe that all great artists, regardless of their medium, including chefs, arrive at a basic set of practices over their career that they apply in creating their masterpieces – The canvas, the medium, the framework, the subject, the colour combinations. And then there are the less tangible things – an overall sense of balance & harmony & most importantly, the soul of the artist himself, a piece of which gets left behind in every creation by him/her. To get creative with food, we first need to understand what happens when we eat. All reactions to food are based on the human senses of sight, sound, smell, touch & taste. The saying “when we eat, we eat with our eyes first…” is true. How food looks determines the first reaction to it. Then as one gets closer to it, the aromas come into play. When food comes in contact with the mouth, the palate comes into action bringing along with it the brain & a gamut of intangible reactions like perception & taste memory. So, approaching it holistically, when creating a dish, it's important to construct it foundation outwards (taste is the first accomplishment and presentation the last), but the eating experience of the diner is visually inwards (they encounter presentation first). It’s in our nature to look for balance in all aspects of life, seeking balance is human. When you are cooking, look for that fine balance for a masterpiece. Whether you’ve got a first date or a big job interview, bad breath can make quite a bad impression. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to use your diet to make your bright smile smell better. 

 

Good dental hygiene is the best way to prevent bad breath, but the food you eat can also make a major impact. We all know onions or garlic are a no-no if you’re looking to kick halitosis to the curb, but what causes bad breath goes deeper than stinky foods. The bacteria in your mouth, rather than the odors in the food itself, produce sulfur compounds responsible for bad breath as they break down leftover food particles and dead cells. With these simple bad-breath remedies, you can help clear out those bacteria and be fully prepared to dazzle your date, that job interviewer or anyone else who happens to catch a whiff.

 

8. Raw Fruits And Veggies

Crunchy fresh fruits and veggies, including apples, pears, carrots and celery, help produce saliva, which cleans out the odor-producing bacteria in your mouth. Plus, they’re rich in fiber, so they act as natural toothbrushes as you eat. If you opt for apples, you’ll get a triple dose of bad-breath prevention: A study in the Journal of Food Science found that apples help neutralize the bad-breath odors caused by raw garlic. So next time snack on some healthy fruits and veggies.

 

7. Sugarless Gum

Chewing gum helps to loosen and remove both food and dead cells from your teeth, which are what bacteria need to create bad breath. Sugar-sweetened gum, though, can promote further dental decay so try gum sweetened with the natural alternative xylitol. Skip after-dinner mints and chew gum instead. The bacteria in your mouth love sugar. Chew sugarless gum instead. Gum stimulates saliva, which is the mouth’s natural defense mechanism against plaque acids, which cause tooth decay and bad breath. 

 

6. Ginger

Ginger contains a compound called 6-gingerol, which stimulates an enzyme in our saliva that helps to break down sulfur compounds in the mouth. Try combining pressed ginger, lemon juice and warm water for an easy, at-home mouth rinse. Ginger has long been used as a natural remedy for upset stomachs, it is often used for knocking out halitosis. To make a homemade ginger rinse, dice fresh ginger and mix with lemon and hot water.

 

5. Fennel seeds

Fennel seeds have been appreciated by many cultures as a digestive aid. Both the flavorful, crunchy bulb and aromatic seeds of the fennel plant are highly nutritious and may offer impressive health effects. They are similarly employed as a remedy for bad breath because they help neutralize unpleasant odors. Like crunchy foods, they encourage the production of saliva, which helps rinse bacteria way. The oil from fennel seeds also has antibacterial properties that can help fight odor-generating germs.

 

4. Yogurt

A daily serving of yogurt has been shown to reduce the level of odor-causing hydrogen sulfide in the mouth, as well as diminishing unhealthy bacteria; one study showed a reduction in plaque and gum disease in yogurt eaters as well. The American Dietetic Association confirms this by recommending vitamin D from yogurt, cheese and milk for fighting bad breath because it creates an unpleasant environment for bacteria growth.

Yet another reason to get your daily H2O. In general, water acts as a cleanser and encourages saliva production; swishing water helps rid the mouth of food that bacteria feasts upon. This one is easy but crucial. By keeping well-hydrated, you’ll naturally rinse away food particles and dead cells and make your mouth a less hospitable breeding ground for breath-causing bacteria. Stay hydrated and you’ll end up getting added benefits to a good health.

 

2. Peppers And Papayas 

Bad-breath producing bacteria does not get along well with vitamin C, which is an important dietary component for preventing gum disease and gingivitis. While many people take vitamin C supplements, they can cause gastrointestinal problems that can further add to bad breath. Oranges have a good reputation for their remarkable levels of vitamin C, but other foods like bell peppers, papayas and strawberries have even more.

 

1. Cherries

Cherries are a great source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is known to be a potent antioxidant which can ward off oral nasty bacteria which are capable of producing methyl mercaptan (which can again lead to a foul smelling mouth). It makes the environment unfit for the growth of smelly bacteria.
