Around the world, the effects of climate change have taken a turn for the worst. Ice caps are melting, species are going extinct, and lands are at risk of drowning. In light of all this, it is understandable that more and more people are feeling a major sense of unease about the impending climate crisis. Many are feeling anxious about it to a concerning extent. The hashtag eco-anxiety on Instagram has over three thousand posts already from around the world. Thankfully, there are mental health professionals on the site who are helping people out! For example, the account @therapyforwomen made a post about it recently. And it seems to have resonated with a lot of people.

Eco Anxiety has become a new term for those that have anxiety about climate change and the future. It’s a real thing and those with anxiety are more prone to have anxiety about this. Lots of sessions with clients of mine have been geared towards this lately so I wanted to share this with you. Here are a list of 5 ways to deal with it. I will be sharing a specific tool for how to identify what you can versus can to control for number one. Remember like any other type of anxiety- mindfulness, focusing on what you can control, surrendering to things that are out of your control and taking care of yourself are important things you can do. When I get overwhelmed I try to get support from others and remember I alone did not cause climate change and I alone cannot fix it- however they are things we can do. Sometimes it’s us doing small things that helps- not because it’s going to make a drastic difference necessarily but because we feel better when we put our feelings into ACTION. Know what you can control when feeling eco-anxiety
Creating a list helps us gain more focus and understanding of our reality. Amanda of @therapyforwomen says that you should make a list of things you can control and things you cannot control. So, you cannot control the daily dumping of toxic waste into rivers around the world, but you definitely can control a lot of things around the house. You can control water wastage by reusing water. You can also reduce shower time – or switch to the bucket method as it helps you keep track of how much water you are using. When we have a list like this in front of us, we can actually act on the things we can control. Moreover, you can also urge these companies and governments to take action and be more eco-friendly. It is important to remind ourselves that we singlehandedly cannot stop or reverse climate change.

Chances are that you are not alone in this emotional turbulence caused by climate change. Many people who are suffering from eco-anxiety may not even know a term exists for it. Another way in which reaching out helps here is that you can come up with measures to be more eco-friendly as a community. Let's take a break from the science for one post, and focus on mental wellbeing. . Some of the predicted impacts of climate change are scary . Mental images of worsening droughts, wildfires, tornadoes, mass migration of people, war… [11,12]. It's bad. These concerns can make people sad and anxious – this is known as "climate anxiety" . Many people are considering not having children because they are afraid their children will suffer due to climate change . How can we both be honest about the situation and be happy? . Look at the POSITIVES too. Here are a few: the number of people in extreme poverty has more than halved since 1990 . Average life expectancy has increased from 32 years in 1900, to 72 years in 2015 . Climate change causes suffering, and will hit people who are already vulnerable the worst . But visualising this compared to an alternative, better world, can give us something to aim for and motivate us to act to improve the world . . TALKING to people who feel a similar way to you can be comforting and empowering. Finding these people can be difficult, depending on where you live and your individual situation, but climate strikes are surely a good start! . COUNSELLORS are people with expertise in mental health, who you can talk to without being judged, and to gain advice on how to help yourself be in a better frame of mind. The process is confidential, so no-one has to know if you use counselling . You may be able to find counselling through your school, university, workplace, privately, or online. . Part of climate anxiety comes from feeling powerless to help . But you really can make a difference! Such as by educating yourself, raising awareness in others, changing your lifestyle, and protesting , but also by choosing your career to help fight climate change (see one of our previous posts)! . It is very easy to lose control of our thoughts. We may not even realize how much we are catastrophizing and getting far from reality. Moreover, this habit induces anxiety and stress too. So, it is important to be conscious of our thoughts. Once you realize you are doing that, you can steer yourself back to reality. Also, practicing a relaxation technique at this time is also recommended.

Often, we tend to distract ourselves from what we are feeling. We may binge watch a show or go to sleep and try to forget the pit of fear in our stomach. But this approach is not helpful in the long run. Running from what we are feeling only delays the solution to it. So, the next time you feel eco-anxiety coming up, do not brush it off. Sit with that fear or that discomfort. Comfort yourself and ask what you can do now to ease this feeling. By doing so, you will be more in tune with your emotions too.
