Eco Anxiety has become a new term for those that have anxiety about climate change and the future. It’s a real thing and those with anxiety are more prone to have anxiety about this. Lots of sessions with clients of mine have been geared towards this lately so I wanted to share this with you. Here are a list of 5 ways to deal with it. I will be sharing a specific tool for how to identify what you can versus can to control for number one. Remember like any other type of anxiety- mindfulness, focusing on what you can control, surrendering to things that are out of your control and taking care of yourself are important things you can do. When I get overwhelmed I try to get support from others and remember I alone did not cause climate change and I alone cannot fix it- however they are things we can do. Sometimes it’s us doing small things that helps- not because it’s going to make a drastic difference necessarily but because we feel better when we put our feelings into ACTION. How have you been coping if you have been feeling anxious about climate change? PS- this is not a place to debate if client change is real and I’m not going to engage in that. #climatechange #ecoanxiety #climatechangeawareness #climatechangeanxiety #anxiety #anxietyrelief #anxietyproblems #anxietyattack #panicattack #panicattacks #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #millenials #genz

Know what you can control when feeling eco-anxiety

Creating a list helps us gain more focus and understanding of our reality. Amanda of @therapyforwomen says that you should make a list of things you can control and things you cannot control. So, you cannot control the daily dumping of toxic waste into rivers around the world, but you definitely can control a lot of things around the house. You can control water wastage by reusing water. You can also reduce shower time – or switch to the bucket method as it helps you keep track of how much water you are using. When we have a list like this in front of us, we can actually act on the things we can control. Moreover, you can also urge these companies and governments to take action and be more eco-friendly. It is important to remind ourselves that we singlehandedly cannot stop or reverse climate change.

Are you suffering from eco-anxiety?⁣ ⁣ Facing the Climate Emergency alone can be overwhelming. As an individual, there’s only so much we can do to lower our personal carbon emissions – what we really need is for the world’s governments to act on this crisis. ⁣ ⁣ The entire system needs reworking; for too long governments and corporations have put profit over people and planet. Extinction Rebellion are targeting those who have the power to make changes to the way society functions. ⁣ ⁣ As individuals the most powerful thing we can do is come together. There will be no solution to eco-anxiety until we know that adequate action is been taken. ⁣ ⁣ Joining your local XR group, you can meet people who share the same vision for a greener future and know that by standing up for what you believe in, you are making a difference. #ExtinctionRebellion #ActNow #EcoAnxiety #RebelForLife #ClimateEmergency #TellTheTruth

Chances are that you are not alone in this emotional turbulence caused by climate change. Many people who are suffering from eco-anxiety may not even know a term exists for it. But if you take a step forward and open up about it, you can help yourself and others too. Another way in which reaching out helps here is that you can come up with measures to be more eco-friendly as a community. Because when people come together, lasting and bigger changes can be made more easily. Also, online resources like these pages are also a great way to seek support.

Let's take a break from the science for one post, and focus on mental wellbeing. . Some of the predicted impacts of climate change are scary [11]. Mental images of worsening droughts, wildfires, tornadoes, mass migration of people, war… [11,12]. It's bad. These concerns can make people sad and anxious – this is known as "climate anxiety" [5]. Many people are considering not having children because they are afraid their children will suffer due to climate change [13]. How can we both be honest about the situation and be happy? . Look at the POSITIVES too. Here are a few: the number of people in extreme poverty has more than halved since 1990 [8]. Average life expectancy has increased from 32 years in 1900, to 72 years in 2015 [9]. Climate change causes suffering, and will hit people who are already vulnerable the worst [10]. But visualising this compared to an alternative, better world, can give us something to aim for and motivate us to act to improve the world [7]. . TALKING to people who feel a similar way to you can be comforting and empowering. Finding these people can be difficult, depending on where you live and your individual situation, but climate strikes are surely a good start! . COUNSELLORS are people with expertise in mental health, who you can talk to without being judged, and to gain advice on how to help yourself be in a better frame of mind. The process is confidential, so no-one has to know if you use counselling [1]. You may be able to find counselling through your school, university, workplace, privately, or online. . Part of climate anxiety comes from feeling powerless to help [5]. But you really can make a difference! Such as by educating yourself, raising awareness in others, changing your lifestyle, and protesting [6], but also by choosing your career to help fight climate change (see one of our previous posts)! . We wish you all the best, and send you strength. . Eric and Issy, from @climate_science <3 . References ⬇️

It is very easy to lose control of our thoughts. We may not even realize how much we are catastrophizing and getting far from reality. Moreover, this habit induces anxiety and stress too. So, it is important to be conscious of our thoughts. Once you realize you are doing that, you can steer yourself back to reality. Also, practicing a relaxation technique at this time is also recommended.

Often, we tend to distract ourselves from what we are feeling. We may binge watch a show or go to sleep and try to forget the pit of fear in our stomach. But this approach is not helpful in the long run. Running from what we are feeling only delays the solution to it. So, the next time you feel eco-anxiety coming up, do not brush it off. Sit with that fear or that discomfort. Comfort yourself and ask what you can do now to ease this feeling. By doing so, you will be more in tune with your emotions too.

DIY Sanitizers At Home To Keep COVID-19 At Bay

When it comes to preventing the spread of infectious diseases like COVID-19, nothing beats good old-fashioned hand washing. But if water and soap aren’t available, your next best option, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Trusted Source, is to use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 per cent alcohol. Sanitizers are definitely the need of the hour.

But the demand for hand sanitizers has been increasing day by day. Unless you have a stockpile of store-bought hand sanitizer, you’ll likely have a hard time finding any at a store or online right now. Due to the rapid spread of the new coronavirus, most retailers can’t keep up with the demand for hand sanitizer. The good news? All it takes is three ingredients to make your own hand sanitizer at home. Read on to find out how.

The Ingredients Required

Via Make magazine

  • 2 parts isopropyl alcohol or ethanol (91–99 percent alcohol)
  • 1 part aloe vera gel
  • a few drops of clove, eucalyptus, peppermint, or other essential oil

Alcohol can be hard on your skin, so using aloe is a good way to counteract that effect and keep your hands smooth. If you want to keep things natural, you can use aloe vera gel straight from the plant. Note that using isopropyl alcohol diluted beyond 91% will result in a weaker hand sanitizer that doesn’t meet the CDC’s 60% benchmark.

Some Precautions Before The Attempt

Via Rolling stone

If you’re making hand sanitizer at home kindly adhere to these tips. Make the hand sanitizer in a clean space. Wipe down countertops with a diluted bleach solution beforehand. Wash your hands thoroughly before making the hand sanitizer. To mix, use a clean spoon and whisk. Wash these items thoroughly before using them. Make sure the alcohol used for the hand sanitizer is not diluted. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly until they’re well blended. Don’t touch the mixture with your hands until it’s ready for use.

Things You Would Need

Definitely, it is a wiser idea to keep the things you would be needing all in one place ready. You should not mess up the sanitation around the bottle of sanitizer. The things to check off the list while making a hand sanitizer are some measuring cups, measuring spoons, a whisk. Some empty spray bottles or even empty lotion or sanitizer containers would do.

Is It Safe To Use?

Via Plastics today

DIY hand sanitizer recipes are all over the internet these days but are they safe? Will they be effective against protecting from dangerous viruses and bacteria? Yes and no. Confused? These recipes, including the ones above, are intended for use by professionals with both the expertise and resources to safely make homemade hand sanitizers. Homemade hand sanitizer is only recommended in extreme situations when you’re unable to wash your hands for the foreseeable future.

How To Use Hand Sanitizers

Two things to be aware of when using hand sanitizer are that you need to rub it into your skin until your hands are dry. If your hands are greasy or dirty, you should wash them first with soap and water. With that in mind, here are some more tips for using hand sanitizer effectively. Spray or apply the sanitizer to the palm of one hand. Thoroughly rub your hands together. Make sure you cover the entire surface of your hands and all your fingers. Continue rubbing for 30 to 60 seconds or until your hands are dry. It can take at least 60 seconds, and sometimes longer, for hand sanitizer to kill most germs.

Hand sanitizers are a handy on-the-go way to help prevent the spread of germs when soap and water isn’t available. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help keep you safe and reduce the spread of the new coronavirus. If you’re having a hard time finding hand sanitizer at your local stores and hand washing isn’t available, you can take steps to make your own.
