Bhumi Pednekar In Bala: Yet Another Example Of Brownface In Bollywood

Published

on

By

Let’s start this article with a quick question. What is the common factor between Hritik Roshan in Super 30, Alia Bhatt in Udta Punjab, and Bhumi Pednekar in Bala? All three actors wore brownface in their respective Bollywood movies. They did so to appear darker and more “real” for their character. You might ask, well, is there anything wrong with that? Absolutely!

Bhumi’s first look in Bala

Bala has Ayushmann Khurrana, Yami Gautam, and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles. The movie tells the tale of a man coping with premature balding. And as a major subplot, it focuses on prejudice against dark skin.

And yes, the irony of casting Yami Gautam in the same film – an actress who proudly endorses fairness creams – is definitely not lost on us.

Why is brownface problematic?

How many times have your relatives suggested home remedies to make your skin lighter? Or, alternatively, how many times have you been praised and complimented for your fair skin? Just a quick look tells us that India has a major, major obsession with fair skin. And thus, it is clear to see that we associate it with beauty, attractiveness, and success. As for dark skin colours, the opposite is true.

What gives you the right to tell a story about a group or a community, all the while actively shunning their members based on gender, colour, caste, race, or sexuality?

How is it fair?

Obviously, Bollywood has a serious problem with representation. It refuses to cast actual actors who have lived or are living the experience it claims to support. So, be it Akshay Kumar playing a transgender woman in Laxmmi Bomb to now Bala, the same pattern is repeated again and again.

How did we get here?

Under British rule, white skin automatically meant you had power and money, and dark skin meant you were inferior. And even before that, our caste system was not devoid of colourism either. Fair-skinned people were wealthy, and dark-skinned people worked in the fields and faced centuries of oppression. As the decades progressed, companies began to exploit these ideas.

Hence, our skewed ideas of beauty, class and caste prejudices now sell fairness creams, lotions, and movies.

What can Bollywood do?

Hire dark-skinned actors. Hire the people you are writing about – the people whose lives you want to make money off of. Directors and actors alike need to do some serious introspection. They need to ask themselves what kind of work they want to do. Because with movies like these, they are telling stories for the sake of money or fame.

And no matter how hard they try to convince themselves, they are not bringing about any real change.

First Look Of Much Anticipated “Pati, Patni Aur Woh!” Is Here!

Published

on

By

Kartik Aryan, Bhumi Pednekar and Ananya Pandey reveal their looks for their upcoming flick, “Pati, Patni Aur Woh”. Not to mention, that the much awaited and talked of film is finally around the corner, with all the millennial actors in it! What more can one ask for?! The movie is a remake of the 1978 original, by the same name. While Kartik and Bhumi play ‘Pati’ and ‘Patni’ respectively, Ananya’s character espouses a third-wheeling capacity altogether taken to a next level; slyly referred to as “Woh”!

The actors have teased us enough with slight hints and snippets of their shoot in Lucknow but they have finally been upfront about their looks and have posted the same on social media. Here’s a quick glance at the same!

Bhumi Pednekar

Bhumi Pednekar is the self-proclaimed ‘high maintenance’ wife, but only emotionally! Bhumi Pednekar was seen wearing a green sari, carrying a Physics textbook for CBSE Class XII, making it an obvious thing that her profession is gonna be that of a teacher. Ananya Panday’s look, on the other hand, is quite contrasting!

Ananya Pandey

“Yeh Agneepath hai, isse koi pyaar nahi kar paaya!” wrote Ananya Panday sharing her first look. The actress looks cool and funky in the first look, drawing heavy attention with her yellow sleeveless top and rose-tinted glasses, holding a denim jacket in her hand. And finally, the man of the movie, Kartik Aaryan shared his first look with the caption, “Haye… kya smile hai!”

Kartik Aryan

“Miliye Chintu Tyagi se.. Kanpur ke sabse aadarshvadi pati,” wrote Kartik Aaryan on Twitter introducing everyone to Chintu Tyagi. Although his character has an overall innocent look with a plain check shirt, riding a scooter – but the wink in the poster asserts a different shade to his character! The poster proclaimed Kartik Aaryan to be a ‘haalaat ka shikaar’ pati, who is stuck between the ‘patni’ and the ‘woh’ in the film.

Final Thoughts

“Pati, Patni aur Woh” is directed by Mudassar Aziz and releases on December 6. Well, who all are psyched now??
