Kartik Aaryan’s Monologues: Will This Misogyny Ever End?

Kartik Aaryan’s movies are not exactly progressive. And that is far from breaking news for anyone who has kept up with this man’s career. Ever since Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Kartik has been both loved and criticized for picking up similar roles with similar dialogues. But the issue here is way bigger than his acting choices. This week saw the trailer launch of “Pati, Patni, Aur Woh”. Directed by Mudassar Aziz, it stars Aaryan alongside Bhumi Pednekar and Ananya Pandey. And yet again, we get a monologue from his character, as he rants about his sex life.

Rape jokes were never funny

The trailer for the movie is just above the two-minute mark. But it manages to fit in a rich plethora of sexist ideas in it very conveniently. Kartik Aaryan’s character, Chintu Tyagi is cheating on his wife with his colleague. As he tries to hide his infidelity, he spins a web of lies – you know, Bollywood’s run of the mill takes on this genre. But there’s a very specific dialogue in it that is really, really concerning.

If you ask your wife for sex, you’re a beggar. If you don’t have sex with her, you are depriving her. And if you manage to get sex from her through a jugaad, you are dubbed a rapist. (Indian Express)

What is the phrase “haasil kar lena” doing in a conversation about sex? Chintu Tyagi is desperately trying to paint himself as the victim here as he makes a joke out of marital rape. Because unless and until you think your wife “owes” you sex, you wouldn’t say things like this. This is a scary perspective to show on screen, right? This guy is belittling the #metoo movement, reducing women to sex objects, and demanding to be sympathized with, too – all in the same breath. No wonder that the men who like his movies and the kind of ideas he promotes are often (termed as) incels.

And this is certainly not the first time…

Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, and now this movie – all of them have this angry man who essentially hates women, and takes it out in the form of these monologues. One would think that at least once his characters would attempt to solve these issues like an adult. But that never happens – they keep forging an escape route but never a solution.

What does Kartik Aaryan have to say about it?

Via Google

Unsurprisingly, he almost always stands by his characters and the worldview they embody. In a country like India, where every other woman has experienced sexual assault and harassment in one form or another, monologues like these only add fuel to the fire. You see, they tell men that it is okay to be vindictive – to look at sex as something to be “achieved” – to vilify their girlfriends every chance they get. Men like him fail to recognize the effect their work has on the masses. Or maybe it’s all intentional, and they are content with it. Because hey, it’s making them richer at the end of the day. So who cares about the women who will be left to deal with the repercussions?

Although the couple did not confirm their son’s arrival, they never confirmed their pregnancy in the first place. Nevertheless, the name of the baby boy has a special significance.Because it is a nod to River Phoenix, Joaquin’s elder brother.
In May, Mara, 35, and Phoenix, 45, were reported to be expecting their first child together.
Joaquin had expressed during an earlier 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper how he has a special professional link with the legacy left behind by his beloved brother. “In the past, there was always a presence in all our work that we took individually and collectively. Absolutely (feeling River’s presence in his work) … there was a connexion to River in some way in virtually every movie I made. I think we all felt his presence and guidance in our lives in numerous ways,” the joker star confessed.

Soon after, they began dating and made their red carpet debut at the Cannes Film Festival 2017 closing ceremony. Phoenix confirmed months later in an interview that they were staying in the Hollywood Hills together.

For his title role in the 2019 film “Joker,” Joaquin Phoenix, 45, won the best actor Oscar, and Mara, 35, was twice nominated, once for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and once for “Carol.”

On work front, there are many recent reports which says that Joaquin Phoenix to return as joker in two projects. In two films, the actor could land a whopping $50 million bid to reprise the Crown Prince of Crime. Originally, Phoenix thought that Joker was a standalone film, but now he’s changed his tune, a source told the tabloid. Despite the controversy that came with last year’s publication, he wants to play the role again.

It is reported that Warner Bros Pictures was ‘as surprised as anyone’ with the achievement of Joker in 2019. A long term agreement is being prepared to make two sequels in the next four years. It is said to be about getting the Oscar-Winning star to accept the terms and it will by far result in his career’s biggest pay cheque.
