As the fuel powers, vehicle food drives our basic metabolism allowing us to survive. What’s more interesting about food is that we have turned it into an escape button. A small but temporary fix for all life’s problems is its anger, mood swings, depression, anxiety, etc. Eating for comfort or any emotional reasons is not necessarily a bad thing. As long as the food does not become the main source of comfort or method for dealing with life’s stress and challenges. Using food to consistently soothe emotional ups and downs can quickly become Binge Eating Disorder. This can result in some serious complications.
Binge eating is one of the fastest growing mental health related disorders in the millennium. Many individuals who struggle with binge eating also have a particular food that triggers the episodes. Foods that are higher in carbohydrates and fats can cause the release of the hormone serotonin in the brain. This induces pleasurable feelings. For this reason, people who are dealing with eating disorders shift towards foods with these components. It can either be for comfort or as a means of escaping from difficult situations and fall into an emotional trap.
What is binge Eating ?
Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is commonly known as compulsive overeating. It includes consuming abnormal amounts of food while feeling unable to stop and a loss of control. The episodes typically as occur on average a minimum of twice per week for six months or more. BED was first explained in 1959 by Albert Stunkard, a psychiatrist. It was previously called Night Eating Syndrome (NES).
The term was created to define similar binge eating behavior without the nocturnal aspect. Though binge eating disorder can occur in men and women of normal weight, it often leads to the development of unwanted obesity. This can indirectly reinforce further compulsive eating. Men and women who are suffering from binge eating disorder often struggle with emotions of disgust and guilt and often have depression or anxiety. The negative feelings that usually accompany this often lead him or her to continue to use food to cope; thus creating a vicious cycle.
Consequences of Binge Eating
The consequences of eating disorders involve many physical, social, and emotional difficulties. Some of these complications are:
- Cardiovascular diseases due to high cholesterol.
- Type 2 Diabetes as glucose levels shoots up.
- Insomnia or sleep apnea
- Depression and/or anxiety
- Gallbladder disease
- Muscle and/or joint pain
- Gastrointestinal difficulties and many more.
Acknowledge that there may be a problem
Look closely at the behavior and ask: “Am I eating for reasons other than nourishing my body or enjoyment?” Then, consider what needs you are trying to meet through food. Our body needs 2500-3000 calories per day. Anything more than that is stored in our body as fats. Hence evaluate your eating habits as to how much of food you’re eating. And also if all of the food is actually nourishing the body or not. Acknowledging that there is a problem with your eating habits is the first step towards seeking help.
Especially if overweight, individuals with binge eating may turn to dieting. This is a mistake since dieting involves restriction, which leads to feelings of deprivation, which in turn leads to bingeing. Instead, try to reconnect with your body’s signals of hunger and fullness. If a desire to eat is present, ask yourself: “Am I really hungry? If not, try to gain understanding about why you want to eat when not hungry. Could it be loneliness, anger, frustration, or depression? Know yourself.
Recent studies suggest that binge eating patients respond well if treated. In follow-up studies at 5 years, 70% of individuals with binge eating disorder who sought treatment were determined to have improved prognosis.
A therapist or counselor can help you get to the “whys” of your eating behavior and find new ways of dealing with the emotions that underlie the behavior. If medical complications exist, consult a physician as soon as possible.

Monophasic sleep is what today’s society would refer to as a “normal” sleeping pattern. There is, however, discussion that this has not always been the case. Those who practice biphasic sleep typically sleep for a long duration at night, for 5-6 hours, and have a shorter period of sleep or siesta during the day. The shorter period of rest typically lasts 30 minutes and gives an energy boost to finish the day. However, a siesta can last for longer, perhaps 90 minutes. An extended siesta of 90 minutes allows a person to have one complete cycle of sleep. Some say that biphasic sleep is a healthier sleep pattern than a monophasic pattern, and some countries have adopted a biphasic sleep pattern as the normal one.
Polyphasic sleepers can rest 4 to 6 times during a day. These sleep combinations are broken down into categories including:
- Everyman: A long sleep time of around 3 hours with approximately three 20-minute naps throughout the day.
- Uberman: Only 3 hours of sleep per day in the form of six 30 minute naps throughout the day.
- Dymaxion: Only 2 hours of sleep per day, in the form of 30 minute naps every 6 hours.
No one person’s sleep requirements are exactly the same. Some require 8 solid hours of sleep for optimal function. Someone else, however, may lead a productive and healthy life on 5 hours of sleep per night with a short nap or naps during the day.
What Exactly Polyphasic Sleep?
Most people are monophasic sleepers, meaning they get all of their rest in one long chunk, typically at night. Polyphasic sleepers, meanwhile, snooze in short bursts throughout the day instead of sleeping all night. There are many different polyphasic sleep schedules, according to the Polyphasic Society, but one of the most popular involves a longer “core” sleep anywhere from 90 minutes to six hours, supplemented by 20-minute naps.
