Are You Doing Laundry The Right Way?

Laundry might be dismissed as just another task in your day, but there are actually many things we often do wrong. From washing fine fabric to jeans, here’s all you need to know to make sure your clothes come out of the dryer fresh and clean!

1. Don’t wash your jeans as often

Unless and until your jeans have a nasty stain of curry, you do not actually need to put in the washing machine twice a month. Denim as a fabric is quite sturdy and thus, you can wear it for an extended period of time as well. But of course, that does not mean the cloth will not accumulate germs. For that, the best way to tackle is to put your jeans in a plastic bag and place it in the freezer – the cold temperature will easily kill off the bacteria that causes the bad smell.

 

2. Don’t use too much detergent

An excess amount of detergent can actually work the other way round and cause dirt particles to stick to your clothes. This means your clothes will come out just as dirty, if not more. To prevent this, use around half of the detergent you already use, and you can adjust accordingly from there.

 

3. Dry the sweaters directly

Putting your winter wear sweaters in the dryer can cause damage to them. The fabric may become loose and thus, causing the sweater to lose its shape. This will help in keeping the texture and fabric last for a longer duration of time.

 

4. Keep the machine clean

After every laundry wash, fill up your washing machine with some water and rinse away the remnant dirt particles and stray threads. This will keep the machine clean and prevent any damage from happening. Accumulation of this dirt is not good for the working of the machine.

 

5. You can unshrink your laundry clothes!

We all have that one extra nice shirt that we wore once, put it in the wash, and it came out two sizes smaller. But the thing is, the shrinking is really reversible. All you have to do is put the fabric in warm water with some baby shampoo. It will cause the fibres in the cloth or relax and stretch out again, thus reversing the shrinkage.

 

6. Know the temperatures

Certain temperatures are more suitable for specific kinds of fabric. If you are washing dark coloured clothes or ones that are likely to shrink, use cold water. But if you are washing clothes that are soft, like cloth diapers and towels, hot water is the better option.
