Our mind and body recharge when we sleep. A night of restful sleep can wash away the daily wear and tear that we take on. But a lot of us especially teens are unable to get to bed and actually sleep for eight hours. Over time, as stress and tiredness build up inside us, we experience the repercussions of a bad sleep cycle.

Amongst us, the section of people most affected is teens. The mind and body of a teenager are still developing. As this process goes on, their brain needs adequate sleep to replenish its energy.

Today, schools have many rigorous activities and responsibilities that start very early in the morning. Moreover, there are so many distractions available to a teen these days. When we see the big picture of a teenager’s life, a very integral piece is missing – a healthy sleep cycle.

Deterioration in mental health

Numerous studies have found a link between bad mental health and lack of sleep. Feelings of anguish, sadness, and emptiness are bound to arise when you are not getting enough sleep for extended periods.

Learning issues

Performance in classes and tests can also be affected by a lot. Teenagers may stay up all night to study, but that may prove to be counterproductive instead. They may forget things, have difficulty in understanding concepts, etc.

Higher risk of turning to substance abuse

Sleep-deprived teens and adults for that matter are more prone to taking drugs or alcohol. They may turn to these things as a way to distract themselves or find relief.

Lack of interest

Lack of sleep can give rise to a decrease in interest in activities. Something that a teenager might have enjoyed a month ago, may feel like a mundane chore.

Do we even need to talk about the fact that our health is directly proportional to the food we eat? Each of our body part is separately affected by the food items we intake. Therefore, undoubtedly proper diet is a key to proper health. But sometimes even the proper thing might have improper quantity of some ingredients that causes hormonal imbalance. Somehow, skin is the most vulnerable part affected by the intake of something good or bad. All the sugar, oil and fat seem to accumulate and form a sickening patch, acne, pimple, black head and the list goes on. So here’s a list of some skin undermining food items that one must avoid to keep one’s skin healthy:

1. Sugar-Rich Food Items

Directly or indirectly in the form of high-glycemic foods, excess sugar is not good for your skin. It increases the insulin levels and puts unnatural demands before the body to deal with the food just eaten. It causes acne, and saggy skin due to breakdown of collagen and elastin. In addition to this, it causes excess of hair growth and black patches on neck and related areas. Therefore, cut down your sugar intake and limit it to only some healthy amount.

2. Salt

Though salt forms an essential ingredient in most of our foods, excess intake of salt increases blood pressure that affects collagen. Too much of salt also affects the skin around eyes giving it a puffy look.

3. Caffein

How long have you been without your caffeine intake? Not very long I suppose. Caffeine does act as an exfoliating agent when applied externally but too much of caffeine intake does cause severe problems. An excessive amount of caffeine in your system can cause blood vessels to constrict, preventing them from pumping the necessary amount of antioxidants and skin-healthy nutrients that would otherwise maintain the production of collagen, around your body.

4. Processed Food/ Junk Food

Can you even think of a single day that doesn’t involve the consumption of processed or junk foods, be it your instant noodles, ketchup, flavored peanuts, processed milk, juices, pizza, burgers and the list is never ending. But everything comes along with alternatives. Try and follow those alternatives along the lines because no wonder the combination of fat, sugar, and lots of salt (sodium) makes fast food tastier to some people, diets high in sodium can lead to water retention, which is why you may feel puffy, bloated or swollen after eating them. It’s high on the glycemic index, which is bad for wrinkles and acne. High glycemic index products cause hormone levels to spike, which alters the quality of oil in the skin, and potentially causing acne breakouts.

5. Carbonated Drinks/ Alcohol

If you think that an alternative to alcohol as a carbonated drink is a healthy option, then you are surely wrong for both of them are equally detrimental and futile. Numerous studies have shown the negative health effects of drinking soda on your waistline and on your teeth. The higher amount of sugar in them again causes the above mentioned problems. Alcohol on the other hand, wreaks havoc very quickly on our liver which is responsible for our daily detoxification process and makes us look happy and glowing. When alcohol steps into the picture, it puts the breaks into our system resulting in the body looking and feeling toxic from the inside. Alternatives are fruits juices (extracted naturally), coconut water and lemonade (without soda).
